Only had a chopped beef sandwich but they chop their beef and then let it soak in sauce...tasted like it was really old. BQ sauce is thin/watery, tastless. Service was good/friendly...prices high.
Yesterday my wife and I dined here. The pulled pork sandwiches were remarkable; tender and flavorful. Should have tried the charo beans and the fresh cornbread, but the coleslaw was good, odd but good. The place is well worth a visit and much better than the chain barbeques in the area.
Don't listen to the haters.
This is what Texas Monthly has to say about Smokey Joe's. I've been there. The beer is cold, the bbq is GREAT, and the service is outstanding!!!

Smokey Joe’s Bar-B-Que and Grill
Notable decor: Bead-encrusted Longhorn skulls crafted by the owner’s dad.
It’s a family affair, with Joe Garza Jr. running the show; his wife, Rose, doing payroll; his dad, Joe Sr., helping out; and his sister-in-law, Nora, making wonderful sides, like deliciously soupy charro beans. Even though the Garzas use a stainless-steel commercial smoker (primed with pecan and mesquite), they get excellent results. This may well be the best barbecue in South Texas. PS
Rating: 4.75.

El Gourmet, you are wrong about Smokey Joe's. I have eaten there and it is an excellent place to eat. They are friendly and down home, and serve a good portion of meat. Just by reading all of YOUR reviews on other restaurants, it seems to me like you are racist. I have no problem with the people at Smokey Joe's, or any other place that is owned or operated by "mexicans". Maybe you should changed your user name to El Bologna......GO SMOKEY JOE'S!!!!
This is some of the best BBQ that I have had, and believe me, I've been around. Every time i walk in I am greeted by the friendly staff. The brisket is very moist and juicy, you can have it cut anyway you like. The sausage is excellent, try the jalapeno version! The smoked chicken is also very tender and moist. The prices are good, especially for the quality of meat that you are getting. I love the atmosphere, very down home. Like I said, I've been all over the country, this is as good as it gets!
PRICES A LITTLE HIGH FOR THE POOR QUALITY OF FOOD. TOUGH MEAT, FATTY, STRINGY, PORK WAS TAINTED, CHICKEN UNDERDONE. FLOOR DIRTY, TABLE TOPS STICKY, RESTROOMS UNATTENDED. STEER CLEAR.
